SCOPE
Jersey Street RFP
Hillside Grove will provide 232 affordable homes, a grocery store, and community spaces, while prioritizing placemaking, dynamic open spaces, year-round connections to nature, and forward-thinking sustainability and resiliency strategies, creating a magnetic hub for the neighborhood. Drawing inspiration from the sloping terrain, historic homes, and lush tree canopy of the neighborhood, the design aims to foster vibrant streets while preserving the small-town character of Tompkinsville.
A spacious public plaza serves as a modern town square, fostering community connections at the intersection of two major Staten Island thoroughfares. This inviting space features a supermarket, a bus stop, cooling nooks, and an art and seating installation, creating a lively and welcoming environment while cooling the south-facing plaza. Additionally, a large interior courtyard with abundant outdoor amenities that includes a jogging path, community garden, recreation space and seating area will serve the residents of the three buildings.
The project advances sustainability standards with full electrification, passive design strategies to reduce energy demands, and renewable energy sources such as solar panels and geothermal heat pumps, ensuring a resilient and comfortable space for the community to seek refuge.
