Our purpose is to serve and strengthen our communities through connection, collaboration, and creativity.

We are pleased to announce the launch of Purpose by Design Architects in Fall 2022. Kami, Julie, and Rachel met while working as Senior Associates at Magnusson Architecture & Planning. They developed a close collaboration based on a shared vision about purpose-driven work, and their diverse backgrounds, balanced perspectives, and complementary skills enriched their working relationship. This shared goal and depth of experience inspired them to launch this new venture to realize that vision.

We believe in thoughtful, purpose-driven work; in the importance of building relationships and community; in our collective right to healthy, safe, sustainable, and equitable spaces; and in the dignity of all people.  We believe that good design has the power to uplift, to inspire, to make right, and to shape our sense of our shared past, our present experience, and our future narratives.

Our collaboration begins with curiosity and connection.  As partners with our clients, we seek to engage diverse voices, to listen to and explore their ideas and needs, and to work in dialogue towards a shared vision in support of their mission.

We are a purpose-driven design collaborative dedicated to promoting healthy, sustainable, and inclusive spaces at all scales from the dwelling to the neighborhood.

We have the experience and understanding to lead successful, thoughtful, and innovative projects. Together, we have completed over 1,300 apartments and led the design teams for over 2 million square feet of residential, community facility, and commercial space development. Our research has been cited in major publications and used to shape legislation. We partner with local organizations to promote better public spaces and amenities in our neighborhoods and are active in community outreach and engagement.
